Agentic ERP: 7 Questions CEOs Ask Before Adopting It
Key takeaways

  • Agentic ERP lets AI agents prepare and carry out work inside the ERP, not just answer questions.
  • Control comes from design: drafts before posting, approvals, permissions and a full audit trail.
  • Start where effort or risk is highest, measure, then raise autonomy step by step.

Every leadership team that looks at agentic ERP asks roughly the same questions. They are the right questions, because the technology changes who does the work in finance, supply chain and operations. Here they are, with straight answers.

1. What exactly is agentic ERP?

Agentic ERP is an enterprise resource planning system in which AI agents read live business data, reason about it, propose or take actions inside the ERP, and learn from the outcome, under the control of the people who are accountable. The difference from a reporting tool is the word act: an agent prepares a purchase requisition, routes an invoice, drafts a production plan or flags a risk while there is still time to respond. For a longer explanation, see our guide What is agentic ERP.

2. What changes for the business?

Three things change. Questions that used to need a report are answered in seconds. Work that used to be typed is prepared by agents and reviewed by people. And risks that used to appear at month-end, such as overdue receivables, price variances or stock shortages, are raised as they happen. The organisation spends less time collecting information and more time deciding.

3. Is it safe to let AI near our books?

It is, if the system is designed for control rather than added on top. The principles are simple: agents see only what the user may see; they create drafts, not posted transactions; every document still goes through the same validations and approval workflow as before; and every agent action is recorded with who, what, when and why. We explain this in detail in Human in the loop.

4. Will it replace our people?

It changes their work more than it replaces it. Preparation and repetition move to agents; review, exceptions, negotiation and judgement stay with people, who now work from better information. In most companies the immediate effect is capacity: the same team handles more volume, closes faster and spends more time on analysis.

5. What does it cost to run?

AI models are paid per use, so a careless design can become expensive as usage grows. The lever that matters most is memory. eVitalyst stores the context and results of earlier questions in a local vector memory inside its own database and reuses them for similar questions, instead of calling an external model every time. That keeps cost and response time down as adoption grows. See local intelligence.

6. How long until we see value?

Faster than a traditional ERP project, because the data is already there. Asking questions and building dashboards work on day one of an eVitalyst AI rollout. Agents that change how work is done, such as data entry, invoices or planning, are introduced one process at a time, each with its own measures.

7. Where should we start?

Start where effort or risk is highest and the rules are clear. For most companies that means supplier invoices, data entry from documents, collections or material planning. Measure how often people accept the agent’s proposals without change, and raise autonomy only when that number earns it. Our 12-point readiness checklist helps you choose.
